Eurythmy evening at Focus Forum

On 5th - 9th April 2010 at Goetheanum, Dornach Switzerland, there was a "Focus - International Initiative Forum" organized by the Youth Section.

There is a community of individuals who have agreed to re-imagine the world. Some have taken up their tools as craftsmen, sculpting and forming the substance of the earth. Some are grappling with the thought forms that hold us to the present image of the world, and are attempting to free these thoughts from their entrapment. Some are searching on hidden pathways for the heartland’s language. They are all artists and all have different tasks. They recognise each other as essential for the activity of re-constituting existence. All argument has ceased, and the roles played are recognised. This is a new sister-brother-hood. It seeks to bring the imagination of the future beyond the narrowness of the present picture by breathing heart heat into the ice of today to create the water of tomorrow…
This year, therefore, the initiative meeting will seek to expand in accordance with the expansion of the network as a whole. It will open its doors to all – youth, as well as ‘older’ people – who feel a connection to this no-name network.
This meeting will attempt to consolidate, strengthen and celebrate the existing active network. It will also make space for others who feel connected to this work. We welcome, therefore, everyone who has been to previous initiative meetings, as well as those who’ll be attending for the first time – all present and future initiative takers. Focus: International Initiative Forum hopes to strengthen the space between all those who are, or who are seeking to be, active in the world out of this force – who strive with responsibility, and with trust. It aims to build up the substance between all human beings who feel a connection to this ‘invisible’ network.

Young group of Eurythmists organized "Eurythmy Evening" in that context and invited their friends around the world who wanted to take part. We shared eurythmical works at the Big Hall. At the end of the evening we sat in the circle together with the audience and had very inspiring formation of discussion amongst the audience and the performer.

Inspired by the method of Focus meeting, we also formed the discussion out of the individual co-being, out of the future, and attempted to see what emerged through it.

I would like to share a little bit about the method and what was discussed amongst young eurythmists and some stage members of Goetheanum.

We were all asked three questions and we wrote the answer on the paper.
1. What excites you/enthuses you about the future of your profession?
2. What do you wish would happen for the future of Eurythmy?
3. What can you do now in order to bring about this future?

We made pairs and shared answers.
One that listened quietly draw an image what emerged through listening of that person's talk.
We shared the image to each other.
Then we formulated out of what was spoken, the essence of our own statement.
We wrote it on the small paper, we threw them in a hat!
Read them out in the big circle.

Out of this Focus meeting week many significant initiatives were born. One is the Eurythmy Initiatives, "Concordance". The young eurythmists group who will continue this strive and see the role of our time. Other is New Art Collectives, which consists many young spiritual striving artists and try to see what kind of field we can support each other, inspire, corroborate.

I will let you know when I hear new movements out of those initiatives.

Mother Magenta and Father Green

Magenta and Green in Colour Therapy

All colours have their positive and negative influences, according to how and when they are used.

MAGENTA - The spiritual colour. It is also the colour most linked to the deep of the night, the colour at the turning point between night and day. It is the colour which is either super-conscious or unconscious.
For most of us it is the colour of the unconscious. It is related to the Delta state of brain-wave patterns, and there are very few people on this earth who can maintain consciousness at that deep level. For most of us, it is only reached deep in sleep each night - again it is linked to the middle of the night when even if e are awake, our consciousness is often different from how it is in the day- time.
It is the colour which finds its echo deep, deep down, somewhere deeper within my heart than I can imagine. To go deep within myself in response to this colour means loss of consciousness, losing any sense of who I am and becoming par of a whole.
It is the state of consciousness of the Angelic worlds. Each Angel we perceive as separate, as having a different identity to another - but they are in this state where there is no sense of individuality at all. Each one is the whole; it has no consciousness of 'itself' or one's separate identity. It is perhaps, the colour of the Mother element of the God - the Darkness, the containing.

Where, then, is the Father?
In the Green.
In the awakening of the world to new life, new promise of growth, as in the Spring - time.

GREEN is LIFE - the colour of life on earth. It is also the colour of human consciousness. Plants, because they are green in their colour, are very much still existing in the Magenta world. We are magenta on our skin - are we existing in a green world of awareness, of humanness?
Yet it takes the Son to combine the two possibilities, Mother and Father, through His direct experience, through being human, of the Spirit world, otherwise "the light was in the Darkness, and the Darkness recognised it , not".

If we do not 'give off' the magenta hue, but absorb it instead continually, it can be a 'death wish' - a wish to draw back our energy from the 'green world', and to be no longer conscious - a sinking into unconsciousness. This is the negative experience of Magenta. It can also be made positive especially when a person is dying, as this colour has links with hight states of active awareness, - samadli, sartori, many names in many languages.
And green, of course is also in the negative - death. The colour of nature decaying and rotting. Used against cancer it can both attack cancer sells and balance the magenta, giving a person literally an influx of life energy.

Magenta is the pre-birth colour the embryo's link with the Infinite, where it was, and from which it partly feeds. Birth is the focusing of that Being into a point of inversion, out into the world of green, where it grows until one day it is called back and the pattern repeats in reverse order through the point we call death.

Suppose we were to keep growing and growing?
There can also be other death, other births, in one's lifetime. we could live many lives of personality experience in one, if we knew how to, and if this was what we had chosen beforehand......

As I have received a question from a student about the book of Elena Zuccoli, here is some information: Dorothea Mier asked us to refer some written works on it when we consider about making form for different Orchestral instruments. Apparently it is now out of print. English booklet is very thin, only contains the work on tone eurythmy.

Speaking must proceed from hearing


" ............. Nowadays people try to train the voice through the adjustment of the organs in the speech for the sound. This never leads to a natural functioning of the speech-organs. Speaking must proceed from hearing and, indeed, from hearing yourself. You must learn to hear yourself when you say an mm or and nn or an ll. In this case hearing is not quite the same as in ordinary life. It is rather like feeling the sound, as if you took hold of something in your chest and head which pours through the ears. If you remain sensitive you can feel the movements of the ear-drum. Thus speaking depends on hearing, and hearing is actually a feeling. Imagine also how the sound strikes against your ear: the ear-drum begins to vibrate. The oscillations starting from the mouth and sounding through the Eustachian tubes are equally important. They are laid hold of inwardly at first, but the ear resounds in sympathy. When someone else speaks the ear resounds more strongly. Hearing is always connected with the whole human being. It is as if you were in a globe of air and were watching what the air does when you are speaking. What takes place in the diaphragm, chest and head should take place unconsciously. You have to learn everything that has to be learnt through the sound. The breath itself must be regulated unconsciously when you sense the sound and, in sensing, hear. What has to be done in order to speak the sound has to be learnt from the sound itself. There should in no way be a feeling of using the larynx and other organs. You use the air instead. It should grow into a habit to feel what the air does. The special quality of wave sounds, vibratory, impact and breath sounds should be felt. Listening has to become a habit, above all listening to yourself, which in a certain respect is a feeling."

Report from Egypt, Sekem

I have received precious report from Sekem, Egypt. Harald has taken his "Eurythmy in Workplace Training" with Annemarie Ehrlich, once in Summer 2009 in Den Haag, and this time was his second module.


.........Now something about Sekem:
The time there was really great, after 2 days we felt as being there already 1 week as it was so intense.

We started with the processes - the exercises we prepared at home which we tried with the our own group.
We immediately visited the factories to see the workers: cloth makers, tea and food makers etc.
We developed small exercises we thought that they could help the workers to balance the one sideness of their work and make them "a whole being". It was a great pleasure that there were also 4 egyptians from the eurythmy school in sekem with us through the whole time. They were very creative and ambitious with preparing exercises and it was great to work together with them.

In between Annemarie taught us "focus exercises" - eurythmy exercises which train a special eurythmical ability and let this ability come to experience (e.g. straight and round). Each day of the first 2 weeks we also had half an hour of arabic, the colleges of the eurythmy school taught us. So the first week passed quickly, each day we went to a different factory to see the workers to finally decide where each of us will go to teach.

Friday is the only day of in Egypt (so it has this "sunday" feeling) and we made a tour to the pyramids in the desert (Saqqara and Dashur). It was a great experience as we also went in the big "red pyramid" throug the small corridor.

In Sekem we stayed in the brand new guest house - in the first weeks we were the only visitors there is this quite big house.

In the second week we finished our processes and each one prepared the exercise he wanted to do with the group of workers.
We tried out how we could lead step by step to slowly achieve the "end-picture" we set. We continued to work with other exercises and also started with the zodiac-exercises.

We also prepared a small presentation of a canon with the cassinic curve for 12 people we finally showed at the weekly performance at the school on thursday.

Report From Goetheanum “Eurythmy Work Weekend” 13th-15th November 2009



The central theme of this meeting was to look at the specific subjects at various levels of involvement with Anthroposophy, and this impulse was shared and received with great openness and enthusiasm amongst other young colleagues.

From 13 to 15 November '09, there was a Eurythmy Work Weekend in Switzerland at the Goetheanum. There were 25 young eurythmists, mostly from Switzerland and Germany, but also from Sweden and Austria who traveled to attend to this meeting. There were open and dense working atmosphere, through contributions, conversation and direct action in Eurythmy, which was filled in substances in the encounter with each other. Leading participants were Margrethe Solstad, Trond Solstad and Michael Debus.

The following two points were discussed at that meeting mainly:

1. Language in the light of anthroposophy
2. Exchange living questions and concerns regarding the eurythmy in our generation. What are the concerns of each individuals in eurythmy?

Michael Debus described in his contributions on the eurythmy as a servant of the word, with joined stimulating discussions in seminars and working groups. With Trond Solstad, participants recited together and worked on language tasks.

Out of eurythmy exercises which was given in the beginning of the eurythmy development, Margrethe Solstad developed the first question with the participants. It became clear, that we were in absence in the area of understanding for outwardly simple initial exercises, and need to bring comprehension in eurythmy.

Questions and concerns raised by the participants were addressed. Michael Debus contributed in the seminars including: the development of internal autonomy, spiritual training issues, the new essentials more needs for outward contributions as well as the approach to the core of eurythmy, and the question of an adequate build on the vital forces, so that eurythmy can have invigorating effect for the audience.

Overall, the weekend brought many exchanges, in-depth work with eurythmy and their backgrounds, and many open and further questions.

Bericht über ein Eurythmie- Arbeitswochenende



Der Impuls sich mit anderen jungen Kollegen über fachspezifische Fragen auf verschiedenen Ebenen austauschen zu können und die Auseinandersetzung mit Anthroposophie als zentrale Anliegen dieses Treffens wurde mit großer Offenheit und Begeisterung aufgenommen.

Vom 13.- 15. November ´09 gab es ein Eurythmie- Arbeitswochenende in der Schweiz am Goetheanum. Anwesend waren 25 junge Eurythmisten, die meisten aus der Schweiz und Deutschland, aber auch aus Schweden und Österreich reisten Teilnehmer an. Es war eine offene und zugleich dichte Arbeitsatmosphäre, die in der Begegnung untereinander und durch Beiträge und Kolloquien inhaltlich an der Eurythmie und im direkten Tun stattfand. Mitwirkende Dozenten waren Margrethe Solstad, Trond Solstad und Michael Debus.

Die folgenden zwei Punkte standen bei diesem Treffen im Mittelpunkt:

1. Sprache vor dem Hintergrund der Anthroposophie
2. Austausch untereinander zu Fragen und Anliegen die bezüglich der Eurythmie in unserer Generation leben. Was beschäftigt den Einzelnen in der Eurythmie?

Michael Debus sprach in seinen Beiträgen über die Eurythmie als Dienerin des Wortes, es schlossen sich anregende Gespräche in Kolloquien und Arbeitsgruppen an. Mit Trond Solstad wurde gemeinsam rezitiert und an Sprachübungen gearbeitet. Aus den Anfängen der Eurythmie erarbeitete Margrethe Solstad die ersten Angaben mit den Teilnehmern. Dabei wurde deutlich, wie schon in den äußerlich einfachen Anfangsübungen das Umfassende der Eurythmie anwesend ist.

Fragen und Anliegen die von den Teilnehmenden kamen und auch in den Beiträgen von Michael Debus und in den Kolloquien immer wieder auftauchten waren u.a.: die Entwicklung innerer Autonomie; spirituelle Schulungsfragen; das neue Ätherische, die Annäherung zum Kern der Eurythmie, um gleichzeitig stärker nach außen wirken zu können und die Frage nach einem angemessenen Anknüpfen an die Lebenskräfte, sodass Eurythmie stärkend wirken kann.

Insgesamt brachte das Wochenende vielfältigen Austausch, vertiefende Arbeit mit Eurythmie und ihren Hintergründen und viele offene und weiterführende Fragen.
